Located on the Isle of Islay in the Scottish Hebrides, the Ardbeg Distillery has stood for over 200 years recently celebrating their bicentenary in 2015. The distillery was completely shutdown between 1981 to 1989 operating in a limited capacity prior to being purchased by Glenmorangie in 1997 and subsequently coming under the control of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy in 2004. An upgrade to the distillery completed in early 2021 saw a brand new still house and a new set of stills doubling the distilleries production capacity to 2,400,000 litres per annum.
Ardbeg An Oa is singularly rounded, due in no small part to time spent in Ardbeg’s newly established bespoke oak Gathering Vat where whiskies from several cask types – including; sweet Pedro Ximenez; spicy virgin charred oak; and intense ex-bourbon casks, amongst others – familiarise themselves with each other. The result is a dram with smoky power, mellowed by a delectable, smooth sweetness. Hallmark Ardbeg peat, dark chocolate and aniseed are wrapped in smooth, silky butterscotch, black pepper and clove, before rising to an intense crescendo of flavour. This Limited Edition An Oa comes in a BBQ Smoker tin to celebrate the Ardbeg Smoke Sessions with DJ BBQ teaming up with the distillery to deliver barbecue dishes and drinks using Ardeb An Oa and Ardbeg Wee Beastie.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Juicy fruit, fragrant candle wax, and hints of smoked herbs.
Taste: Syrupy sweetness, milk chocolate, orange and smoky tea. Sweet spices and some cigar smoke.
Finish: Butterscotch, aniseed and hickory smoke.
