Established early in 1994, by London wine merchants Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Springbank Distillery’s Gordon Wright. They quickly gained a reputation for maturing whisky in interesting casks, especially in fine wine casks. In 2000, the Murray McDavid team set about reopening the closed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, engaging the services of Jim McEwan, Islay’s most celebrated Master Distiller. In 2012, spirits giant Remy Cointreau purchased Bruichladdich Distillery and Murray McDavid. Later, Murray McDavid was sold to its current owners, leading Scotch whisky broker, Aceo Ltd. Today, the home of Murray McDavid is Coleburn Distillery in Speyside, where they continue the tradition of bottling artfully matured Scotch whisky. Murray McDavid caters for the whole family of Scotch ranging from their rare and prestigious single malts in the Mission Gold series to the Select Grains and through to their carefully Crafted Blends. At the heart of Murray McDavid is their outstanding wood policy. They look to use first fill casks from around the world, sourced from the best producers of fine drinks. With a truly astonishing diversity of casks from producers that includes whisky casks from Chicago’s Koval Distillery, Sherry butts from Bodegas Ximénez- Spínola, in Jerez, Spain. Tawny Port barrels from Caves de Murça, in Portugal, and even beer casks from the MOOR Beer Co. in Bristol, not to mention many highly acclaimed vineyards across France and Europe.
Australian has an official importer for Murray McDavid and to celebrate we’re putting on a whisky tasting. So the majority of Australia can experience this wonderful whisky we have decided to launch this on a Zoom forum where all of the country can join in. We will be joined by Dean Jode the Head of Whisky Creations at Murray McDavid. Dean comes from the beautiful regency town, Cheltenham. In 2011, Dean started hosting drinks enthusiasts at Cheltenham’s adored whisky bar, John Gordons. Where he spent 4 years developing an impressive collection of whiskies, both old and new, with over 300 different malts from around the World. Dean’s involvement with Murrary McDavid started rather cryptically with a chance call from a fellow bar manager and an invitation to attend a private whisky tasting at one of Cheltenham’s finer establishments where Copita glasses were on the table, along with discreetly labelled bottle of golden liquids, it was all very mysterious. To his delight it was hosted by a company called Aceo Ltd. One of UK’s largest cask brokerages. Oddly enough, it wasn’t Scotch on the table, but a mighty fine line up of Irish single malts from the 80’s, outstanding and unexpected! With the tasting going well, conversation flowed, and Dean soon came to learn Aceo owned a dormant whisky brand… his ears perked up! Dean stayed in contact with the Aceo team over the months that followed with the view to help with the development of Murray McDavid brand.
Today, Dean heads the whisky creations team at Murrary McDavid, and when not hosting whisky tastings, can be found playing his trade in traditional dunnage warehouses at Coleburn Distillery, in Elgin.
